Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that occurs outside of the uterus- for example in the pelvis, behind the uterous, in the fallopian tube, in the cervix or even in the abdominal cavity. It is a very dangerous situation that requires immediate medical care.

Ectopic pregnancy is the medical term for an abnormal pregnancy that develops outside of the uterus, for instance in the fallopian tube. It is considered a gynecological emergency because the developing embryo might grow and cause rupture and bleeding of the fallopian tube. The fallopian tube, unlike the uterus, is very narrow, and does not have the ability to expand much, therefore cannot hold a full-term pregnancy. It requires a surgical intervention for terminating the pregnancy.

An ectopic pregnancy is a fetus that develops where it isn't supposed to, meaning not in the uterine cavity. The most common place for an ectopic pregnancy to develop is in the fallopian tube. The danger is that the fetus might eventually cause rupture of the tube, and bleeding into the pelvis region. The ruptured tube causes severe sharp abdominal pain, and that is usually the first symptom that brings to the diagnosis.

Thanks Ridings and Conger..
for easier understanding, ectopic pregnancy means a pregnancy that occurs not in the normal place (uterus/womb). It talks about the implantation of the zygote (embryo).
If it is implanted in uterus wall then it is normal, if it is not in uterus wall (endometrium) then it is called ectopic pregnancy.
So ectopic pregnancy includes :
- extra-uterine pregnancy (including tuba, abdomen, ovarium)
- abnormal intra-uterine pregnancy (some doctors include : cervix, muscular wall of uterine)

ectopic Pregnancy is the implantation of the zygote in a wrong place,(extra-uterine implantation) there are many sites that can be involved, eg F.tubes, ligaments, serosa, etc. Its a gyanaecological emergency, its difficult some time to differentiate from other conditions as it can present as acute abdomen.
