Swelling of the lower leg and ankle is a common problem. It is caused by accumulation of fluid within the ankle joint or in the soft tissues surrounding it. Common causes of ankle swelling include: a traumatic injury, such as an ankle sprain, a broken ankle or stress fractures, an infection that can either occur in the soft tissues around the ankle joint (cellulitis), in the joint itself (septic joint) or in the bone (osteomyelitis), vascular problems such as an obstruction and more. A swollen ankle requires a medical examination and treatment.

A swollen and red ankle suggest either a traumatic injury to the joint or an infection in the joint, adjacent tissues or bones. This is an emergency and it is important to consult a doctor as soon as possible, especially if the joint loses its ability to perform movements in all directions.
