  • Many cases of ordinary hives appear for no known reason. Others may be triggered by viral infections. A few may be caused by medications, usually when they have been taken for the first time a few weeks before.

  • Urticaria (hives) is generally an allergic reaction, or an immune response to food or some other allergen, but can also appear for other reasons, notably emotional stress.
