I have been suffering from back pain for the past two months. I have tried several treatments. Any ideas?

I don't have a history of back pain. I started to experience pain in my shoulders, neck and upper back about two months ago. Prior to the condition I started to work out with a personal trainer, but I felt good for three months, so the doctor and I don't think there is a connection. I tried many types of massages, chiropractic treatment, and Acupunctures. I also went to an orthopedic MD. The doctor prescribed Arxocia for ten days and another round of Arxocia pills . I still have pain in my shoulders and neck. Any ideas what can I do. The doctor says it's nothing serious and that it's called upper back pain and that it will pass with time. Any ideas to ease the pain and treat this?

  • If you are truely concerned and want to find out how bad, or good, your back is then you should get an MRI. Find a good nurosurgeon or orthopedic. Some may say operate -- doesn't mean you have to. At least you have professionals giving you a good idea of what is happening -- been there done that. That is what I would do. Good luck.

  • well irus, ill add my two cents, most people experience back pain some time in their lifes, but in most cases it is not serious and the problem corrects itself before investigation takes place,,however,,some kinds of back pain can be related to a specific disorder....osteoarthritis,pain and stiffness in the back due to degeneration of the joints between the vertebrae in one or more of the ,,cervical vertebrae,,thoracic vertebrae,,or lumbosacral spine...fibrositis,pain and stiffness in the large back muscles....pyelonephritis,pain in the loin due to,infection,of the kidneys..and you have nonspecific back pain, which is due to ligament, joint, and muscle damage...if the back pain is from exercise,or lifting heavy objects, the cause is usually ,,sciatica,,,which is caused by compression of lumbar nerve roots....if the pain is in the small of your back and not spreading to anyhere else, than it is probably a back sprain, can be treated with over the counter meds.............mrfoot56

  • I was at working at a hospital and caught a patient. I had muscle strains and tears. The dr. said that would take 6-8 weeks to heal. After six weeks I still had severe intense pain in neck, shoulders, middle, upper back, and occasional tingling down my right arm. I went to a physical therapist whom tried to help me get through the pain. I was moving along quite nicely, when we decided it was time for me to start lifting weights and getting strenght nack again. My upper back pain sky rocketed! My right arm tinglin got worse, and would turn numb. It then turned blu and purple. I went back to dr. and I ended uo having thoracic outlet syndrome. I had a right rib resection to relieve this. I am 8 weeks post-op and doing great. I am in physical therapy again and have just started lifting weights. My upper back pain and neck pain are very minimal now. I did alot of research on thoracic outlet syndrome. Lots of men get it from body building. The muscles get so tight. you might have it.

  • I've had lower back pain since I was a teen. When my back hurts now, and it always comes and goes, I put a 4 foot stick on my shoulders and stretch it out slowly, dont jerk it or move to far. My doc also gave me 'cyclobenzaprine' to mask the pain, it worked well. That's a muscle relaxer I believe. Also a cold ice pack seems to help also. With me, time seems to be the best cure. Back pain is terrible, it affects your whole life style. Try stretching it out, easy, and give it some time bro. Also, I find it strange your neck and back started to hurt 'AFTER' you used a trainer. I think that's more than coincidence. Your back was fine before you found your trainer, correct?

  • I've read all the replies for you here. Several seem to think your pain is stress related. I had some of the same synthom's that you mention and went all the different dr's as well. I did some research on the internet and decided to try hypnotherapy for stress. It has helped me tremendously and couldn't hurt to add it to your other regimen's.

  • Stretch each morning and night using the muscles that hurt, use a broom stick. Do not over do it, stretch it out to the point right before you feel pain, and hold it for 5-10 seconds. This will loosen the muscles up, so when you use them during the day without thinking, they will be already stretched out. Your doc is right. Time will heal you. Theres no pill that can help, except if you get pain killers which will just mask the pain. Stretch and do not try to do anything you think will aggravate the injurie. You'll be at square 1 if you re-injure yourself. When you do feel better, try and work out the muscles that were hurting you, using very light weight gradually increaseing. You will make the muscles stronger this way. Good luck, in know what you must be going threw and it really sucks!! (Did acupuncture work 4 u? It did nothing for me at all. My back was killing me, and this girl was sticking pins in my ear?? What??? lol)

  • about a month ago i had a severe cramp in my lower back. i was paralyzed for 3 days. luckily i have a friend who's a physiotherapist, she advised me to lie down on my stomach and do compresses of hot and cold alternately. 10 minutes a towel with ice , 10 minutes a heated pillow. it took 3 days but worked like a charm.... B.T.W - upper back pain usually come from stress. have you been under unusual stress lately?

  • Yes, the past 2 months I was under a lot of stress, but I was able to relax completely in the last two weeks. Your answer sounds a little strange to me, but I will consider it.

  • By the way, I just came across a good resource and wanted to share the knowledge back with the community. Here's the introduction about Manipulative and body-based practices that can help people that suffer from upper back pain like myself. Under the umbrella of manipulative and body-based practices is a heterogeneous group of CAM interventions and therapies. These include chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation, massage therapy, Tui Na, reflexology, rolfing, Bowen technique, Trager bodywork, Alexander technique, Feldenkrais method, and a host of others . • Another factor is inflammation - very common to most of us as we get a bit older. So many people take Glucosamine. It may be solving the problem by patching up a lack of Glucosamine production or something - but replacement therapy seems all wrong to me.

Saw an interesting video suggesting joint inflammation is related to immune responses caused by digestive problems. Not as weird as it sounds. It makes sense to me to include a long term holistic view for a developing chronic condition.

Yoga and stretching I have found the best therapy, combined with good hydration (have a glass of mineral water), exercise and being relaxed.

Keyboards, mice and too much work are definitely contributing factors!

  • I've found yoga to be helpful as a preventative measure. Understand the cause of your pain first. A good place to start is HealthiNation for a video on back pain at http://www.healthination.com/Videos/Back-Pain

  • Thank you Mr. Foot for the piece of advice and the information. I feel much better, but my shoulder blades still hurt. My friend told me that he had the same thing and one doctor diagnosed it inflammation because of sitting too long and not correctly in front of a computer in the office.

  • Guys - I wanted to let you know that I feel much much better now. I took some of your advices and tried different treatments. I also reduced stress in my life. changed my work settings to spend less hours by the computer without moving and decided to be more aware of my body's posture. I don't know exactly what helped, but after a few months I started to see a positive change.

just wanted to say thank you to all of you from the bottom of my heart. Have a wonderful spring.
