  • Your cirrhosis is an indication for a liver transplantation, and your doctor should be aware of when you are suitable for transplant and put you on the transplant list. Patients are categorized according to the Child's Criteria method based on their developing of ascites, low albumiin level, encephalopathy (high amonia levels that affect the brain), and blood clotting problems.

  • I had a liver transplant in 2001. You have to be at death's door basically. I had about one more month before my liver would have failed. I was given a pager and received a transplant 2 weeks later. I had been placed on a list years earlier. Your doctor places you on the list. What else would you like to know?

  • In my case, after 3 esophageal bleeds and several preventative variceal band ligations (6 in 15 months), I was "varices-free" as of Nov 2008. The GI guys want to have me evaluated for liver transplant at Baylor, TX. The evaluation looks at the physiological and psychological elements of liver transplant, including a candidate's "support network" pre and post surgery (i.e. non-qualified relatives, spouse, sig other, etc).

The tests carried out during evaluation are to determine a candidate's suitability for receiving a transplant, and MELD score (Model for End-stage Liver Disease). The tests are extensive and too numerous to list, but the evaluation will take a full week in-house at Baylor Regional Transplant Institute. I would think your doctor would be the one to talk to about the mechanism of referral to an Institute near you. I received a Liver Transplantation Patient Manual after referral and found it answered a lot of my questions (though, Baylor...if you r

  • How old are you if i may ask? I'm 53 and i'm a veteran of the air force.
I asked my GI doctor about getting a transplant and he has me started on
a battering of tests and i'm still working on it. I have been admitted 23
times since may 2007 now and i'm starting to hate it and now of all things, i'm starting to get involved in a relationship with a younger woman in another state that i have been talking to for one year now and she lost her husbnd to this devils disease. I have gone so far as gone to see her once 550 miles away and going again on new years but i don't
want to go to the hospital while visiting. How are you doing now and
can you tell me what medicines you have to take now? I guess you have to take the autoimmune meds right? I guess i'm asking stupid questions
but fact is i want to be with this young lady very much but she will
refuse to see e sick at all. I don't want to lose her. I should be talking to a doctor about this. So i'm sorry to have bothered you, i'd

  • You are not bothering me at all I know this backwards and forwards. I will be happy to help in any way I can. I had a genetic disease that is similar to the one Walter Payton had. Only his affects men and mine affects women. I was diagnosed at 32 and had a transplant at 54. I am now 62. (a hot 62, but 62 none the less) First of all are you seeing a doctor from the VA? If you can go to a University Hospital. Can you tell me what your hospital stays were for? Then I can explain what is going on. Suzi

  • I must say I cannot understand what "battery" of tests they are giving you. I had a liver biopsy and was diagnosed in one day. The should be able to tell you what stage you are. There are 4 stages. Have you had gastrointestinal bleeds. If you have ammonia in your brain then they should be giving you a liquid to drink every day called Lactulose. This clears your head. After the transplant I took 36 medications. It is a long recovery. You will get cyclosporin. I was allergic to this and it put me in a coma for 45 days. The took me off this med and I woke up. You will also take prednisone and this will supress your immune system to a point where you will be open for infections of every kind. You may also get diabetes from the drugs. 20% of transplant patients get diabetes. I have it. I am also on insulin. Eventually they will take you off a lot of the meds. I never had any rejection bouts so I am lucky. You may have some but they can handle this in the hospital. I have been ho

  • Thank you for your answer. At my next GI appointment, the doctors told me that to have someone else that i'd like to be there at which time he will explain it all to me and either my brother or sister because i've have been admitted so many times because of ammonia levels, my brain has hardly no memory left. Let's all with this disease stick together.
