I feel like crying!

Hi. My name is Liam Lukas. I believe that I'm suffering from a major depression brought on by a multitude of factors. Stress, work, family, poor diet, etc. . .and it has affected me very deeply. I have bouts of sudden mood swings, feelings of worthlessness, thoughts of suicide, a lack of interest in favorite hobbies, no social activities, and lack of sleep patterns... I'm 33, male, and I feel I'm a burden to my family and feel like a failure. I feel like crying all the time (although I try and hid it by avoiding others).

  • Welcome Liam,
The first and most important step to take is getting the appropriate treatment for your illness. You do not have to disclose to your boss that you are seeking treatment. I believe there are laws in place to protect employees from being terminated based on illness. Either way Anthoney is right.. your life is way more important than your job. Your health is the most important thing.. you will be of no help to your boss if you are not around. So please take care of yourself first.
I am not sure where you are but I would suggest going to the local emergency room and ask the treage nurse to speak with a crisis councellor, then enquire about a mood disorder clinic. Mood disorder clinics have group councelling, individual councelling and psychiatry. It will give you a councellor to speak to on your own and a group to share with and the psychiatrist to ensure you get the proper medications... Use that as a first step to regaining your self confidence...

  • I would put dating on the back burner for right now until you get your illness in check... You have to learn to love and respect yourself before you can love and respect another. Don't worry if you get the treatment you need to control this illness you will find someone to love and who will love you in return. But you have to deal with one thing at a time and right now that is you.

  • Welcome to the forum! I can understand you from being in your shoes. It's very important that you speak to your family doctor if you are feeling this way. Are you overweight?

  • I'm overweight, never had a date (due to a lack of confidence since childhood), although desires of sex frequent my mind (again low-self-esteem prevent going out). I think I'm ugly inside and out, have thinning hair due to low self-esteem, stress, and worthlessness, I have never been diagnosed, but I know something is wrong. But I feel if I go to my doctors, my boss will find out and fire me. I found this forum beneficial and I'm glad (well, you know what I mean) that I'm not alone. Thanks for iMedix. Sometimes without support like this, you do feel alone.

  • Why would your work find out if you go to see a doctor? Is your boss also a doctor or is he a regular visitor there or is that doctor your boss’ friend? Normally the patient’s information is confidential which is not shared outside the clinic. It’s a strong doctor-patient relationship. So don’t worry act now!

  • Hey Jude! Cool man! Sometimes you just have to consider which is more important - your job or your life. It's NEVER the job and EVER. If they have a problem with it, that's their issue, not yours. Besides, you don't have to tell them. You need to take care of yourself and the best way to do so is to tell your doctor about what's going on. He/she definitely has more resources to help you. You can't move forward until you start to feel better and I won’t encourage that. When you're sick, you go to the doctor. This is an illness; you need treatment not your boss.

  • I would visit with a doctor and see if you can get diagnosed professionally. This way you can see what exactly it is you have and find a way to start living with it and leading a happier life by doing so.

I wish you luck, thanks for sharing.

  • Liam,

Hello. There's nothing wrong with crying. You need togo see your doctor and tell him or her all this stuff. Doctors are highly trained to recognize things like depression. Its just scary at first. If you get prescribed medicine, start taking it and stay with it. Things will get better and your boss will notice the improvement and probably be happy about it. Job stress is a real life problem. When the job gets really bad, finding another better job could be just the thing you really need. If your boss does not want you to let you get help, then there is something really wrong with that person. If you are stuck with a crummy boss, the way to get by, is to collaborate with the other people you work with. Its a very old survival technique. Bad bosses do come and go most of the time and you can outlast them by sticking together with your coworkers. I lived through quite a number of them this way. But it is work. Don't take work personally. You gotta not let it get to you.

  • hi Lukas, i am Christophe, i understand quite well what is going through your mind and body. I cry daily by watching films and i am happy to do so. please stay in touch with a doctor and/or psychologist. it can also be a ergo-therapist you can share your troubles. your job is important too, this is so. i lost in 17 years 15 times my job or had from one day to another no money anymore and so that i had to ask for social assistance. it can happen to anybody. even as electric engineer i have no protection to come in such situation! so please stay in touch and avoid isolation. if you need some tips because of your depression i will give you some. bye for now and thank you for sharing about your life.
