Is there any link between bipolar and thyroid?

My daughter who is a bipolar is also taking treatment for thyroid dysfunction. Now she is taking antidepressants. She is showing severe signs of depression and I do feel that depression is growing with her age. She used to be adamant in her childhood and refuse to follow any given instruction or advice of her mom. I have pampered my daughter on many occasions when my wife behaved tough with her. She gets little sleep and put on more weight and looks obese. The regular checkups revealed that she has thyroid dysfunction. Luckily, the given treatment helped her to the minimal levels. Now she is diagnosed as Bipolar too. I am wondering is there any link between bipolar and thyroid?

  • It is common to find Bipolar having thyroid dysfunction. Hypothyroidism can lead to depression. Bipolar also suffer from severe depression. Thyroid dysfunction surely has a link with bipolar disorder. Lower thyroid hormone can lead to depression and other signs of a bipolar as well. But treatment of thyroid dysfunction can treat similar symptoms of a bipolar disorder as well. Hopefully your doctor must have started the treatment keeping this fact in mind.
