Why do they classify Anxiety as a disorder?

I get anxious whenever I have to give exam or when I talk to some person who is new to me. Of late my friend who also has similar but a little heightened emotions like my have been diagnosed for anxiety disorder. I just do not make sense to me. Anxiety helps a person to fight for stress effectively. Then why do they classify it as a disorder?

  • Anxiety itself is not a "disorder". Like sneezing is not a disorder. But there are serious disorders that relate to anxiety (and others that relate to sneezing for that matter, some serious, some not - but they do look similar).

Social anxiety disorder just sounds like a minor thing, a little shy perhaps. Shyness is not Social Anxiety Disorder. "Never mind, he/she will get over it..." - usually children grow out of their shyness, but some do not and become adults who are shy. That is not social anxiety disorder, either.

Social Anxiety Disorder is the uncontrollable over-reaction by the persons instinctive centres in the brain to circumstances that are not actually threatening. It is the same as anyone's reaction, but it becomes a disorder when it starts to threaten one's happiness.

In various degrees the physical reaction is one that has to be dealt with in addition to any learned fear (shyness) that naturally results from discomfort.

  • Anxiety is normal emotion and it is true that it helps to fight stress. But sometimes this anxiety increases to such a limit that it becomes difficult for a person to handle his own stress and then it becomes clear that this normal emotion has actually become an emotional disturbance in an individual. This emotional disturbance on the line of anxiety is called anxiety disorder.
