Is it true that being a bipolar is not a real disease??

I heard it’s more like a type of person you are- moody and all that..are there any proof that it’s a real disease? (I’m not trying to be obnoxious..i only want to understand. Preferably from people that are considered Bipolar)
Thanks!

  • First of all- Bipolar is not a disease, it’s a disorder. There is a huge difference, a disorder is something you born with. And today it’s a 100% sure that Bipolar people are born with the ability to have it. It’s a real illness with real problems.

  • I’m Bipolar and I can tell you that my mania and depression episodes do certainly exist. It is proven that it’s a disorder and that you can control it (most of the times) with the proper medications. I take Lithium which gives me a lot of side effects but nothing compares to the depression episodes.
    So it’s a real disease.

  • no it's not it is a simple scam that money hungry pharmaceutical companies and doctors have wrapped around the unknowing person. This is why we believe such BS because we have no real knowledge of what the heck they talk about. If I slap a bipolar person in the face I bet you they will get mad, now if I give them free money they will be happy. Don't get wrapped around what many money hungry people tell you and make your own answer out of it.

  • Bi-polar disorder is most certainly real. It is listed in the American Psychiatric Associaton's DSM (diagnostic and statistical manual) as a disorder of mood; this is not the same as being moody. Everyone feels moody at times, but it does not interfere with our daily life; Bi-polar does. I have met many folks over the years who have had this disorder, and believe me it is real. Their manic and depressive states were severe enough that they could not function. They suffered loss: jobs, friends, family, their homes, financial loss to the point of bankruptcy, and in some cases, their freedom through either hospitalization or jail. The good news is, it's treatable. Finding a good doctor and the right medications can not only provide great symptom releif, but can improve the quality of life.
