my wife is having arthritis.and yesterday her joint pain has increased. should she stop her exercise?

My wife is having arthritis and she has been advised by the doctor and also by her colleague to go for swimming and running respectively. She has started to go for the swimming and after a week of exercise she is again having pain in her joints. But over all she feels good and so she is continuing with her exercise. And yesterday her joint pain has increased. Should she stop her exercise?

  • Exercise is good for arthritis but she must stop doing running for some time. Swimming is a better option for arthritis pain and there is a possibility that she may be running in excess and this might be increasing her pain. She can continue with swimming. But if the pain does not reduce then she must meet the doctor.

  • If I understood correctly her doctor recommended the swimming which I would understand and agree b/c it is a good exercise for people with arthritis BUT the colleague that recommended running I TOTALY disagree running is very hard on your body and the impact on joints would have to worsen pain especially if in knee! I have osteoarthritis and was told swimming was good BUT not in going to PT and working with them I was never encouraged to take up running!. My knee swells on a daily basis as i get up and do daily routine I would not consider running! I went to PT and they gave me exercises to do that would help my condition and not make it worse. I would stop running ASAP...and if she can I would go to PT and work with them to get some exercises and stretches that would help your condition( this shouldn't take many visits!) and if stopping the running doesn't help the pain decrease I would talk to my doctor asap she could have aggervated her condition with the running.
    Good Luck! God
