Amino acid therapy for alcoholism or substance abuse issues?

Does anyone have any experience with this newer treatment? It is based on replenishing lacking brain chemicals which are causing a "reward deficiency" . The Amino acids are given either through IV or orally. Is this medically accepted? More importantly does it work to prevent relapses? Thanks!

  • I worked with this therapy for a year. The patients still required a medical detox, the time frame for withdrawal tremors was too narrow for Amino acid therapy to be safe.
The patients who followed the South Beach diet did far better than those on IV amino therapy. The IV therapy has to be repeated every 3-6 months to be effective. Use of Naltrexone to help cease cravings and cognitive behavior modification help. Sleep will be the biggest complaint but is easily resolved with several methods.

  • the problem with alcohol is it hinders the bodys abilitie to absorb,,process,,use,,and store nutriants from food, the result is that many,if not all of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients extracted from food during digestion cannot be absorbed through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream..alcohol is toxic to the liver, the organ that processes nutrients.normally the liver stores the nutrients it receives or after processing sends them cascading back into your bloodstream to be used throughout the body, but once your liver is damaged, the liver is no longer able to process food..alcohol interferes with the bodys use of the,,antioxidants vitamin c,..vitamin e,..and selenion...mrfoot56
