can alcohol have an affect on the liver in the long run?

As some of you already know, my son had a drinking problem.He is now over it and back in his normal life. I was wondering though if his drinking (heavy drinking for 3-4 months) can have an affect on his liver in the long run, like something that will only appear when he is older and we can maybe prevent now?
