bipolar- does it just start in the middle of your life?
Can it be a result of a trauma? and if so- how come it took my friend a few months to start acting bipolarly and nor right away? He saw some harsh things in the army and I guess it was that which caused the manic-depression behavior, am I right?

inqspots, it can take a long time for some people to start showing signs of having problems dealing with the realities of war. Why it takes so long, I'm not sure. Are you sure it's Bipolar Disorder? Could it be Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?
With Bipolar Disorder, the patient will have polar opposite moods for weeks at a time. They will be manic, then, all of a sudden, be depressed, most of the time, not realizing the mood change.
Obviously, you are very worried for your friend. You should definitely talk to him about it. If he doesn't think there is anything wrong, and you still believe there is, you owe it to him to talk to doctor that specializes in dealing with soldiers.
Good luck.

Thanks smilie. Well he is seeing someone and they are not sure about the cause yet. He surely doesn't think it's from the war but I know how affected he was by that. He doesn't even mention this traumatic period to his doctor and I think it's important for her to know-if it can, by what you say, be a factor.
