A heart attack is a sudden loss of function due to sudden reduction in oxygen to your heart. The attack is the suddenness of the symptoms. After a heart attack, you are closer than you were before to heart failure. By how much depends on the degree of the attack. Having a heart attack puts you at risk for future attacks. The important things to do now are take your medications regularly, keep a good diet and exercise regularly (but not too hard). Heart failure is the slow progression and decrease in function of the heart. You slowly develop symptoms over months like swelling of your lives and abdomen, difficulty breathing, difficulty sleeping lying down and then using more pillows to sit up while you sleep. Heart attacks can weaken the heart and lead to failure but failure doesn’t usually lead to an attack. They both have similar risks though and your doctor you put you on a medication regimen to reduce your risks.
