How could the doctor tell for sure that whether the vision distortion is caused by astigmatism or cataracts?

I learnt that both astigmatism and cataracts could cause vision distortion and the treatment is also differing for each of the two causes. How could the doctor tell for sure that whether the vision distortion is caused by astigmatism or cataracts?

  • Those are two entirely different things and very easy to decide. A “Cataract” is noticeable through the pupil and it is a physical change in the lens of the eye that could be seen. “Astigmatism” is a visual defect caused by light refracting in two different planes. Do not worry; they cannot be confused with each other.
