  • I personally feel if you are having doubts about diagnosis and treatment you should always seek a second opinion. You may decide to stick with the first doctor BUT you will feel better with the care he provides overall if they agree. A slip disc is also known as a herniated disc and my doctor tried all avenues before surgery was considered. Treatment of a herniated disc depends on a number of factors including:
    •Symptoms experienced by the patient
    •Age of the patient
    •Activity level of the patient
    •Presence of worsening symptoms
Most often, treatments of a herniated disc begin conservatively, and become more aggressive if the symptoms persist.
Info my doctor gave me said only 1 in 10 cases require surgery. Other treatments are:
    Rest & Activity Modification
    Ice & Heat Applications
    Physical therapy
MEDICATIONS: Analgesics (painkillers),Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Codeine ,Muscle relaxants
    Epidural Steroid Injections

Treatment of a disc herniation usually begins with the steps listed above. However, surgical treatment of a herniated disc may be recommended soon after the injury if there is a significant neurological deficit to your problem. Symptoms on pain and sensory abnormalities usually do not require immediate intervention, but patients who have significant weakness, any evidence of cauda equina syndrome, or a rapidly progressing problem may require more prompt surgical treatment.
I wish him the best. God bless you both.

  • Hi,
An epidural steroid injection can be performed under x-ray guidance. Physical therapy may also help with massage, traction, and stretching exercises. Pain medication along with muscle relaxants will also benefit. Normally doctors prescribe surgery only when conservative therapy is not beneficial. So it is advisable to talk to the physician about it and if surgery is recommended, get cleared about the surgery and if benefits overweight risks, your brother can go for it.
