melanoma is the cancer's type, and "in situ" is it's progress. cancer has several levels of progress, and "in situ means it's cancerous but still located in one place. they took a biopsy and sliced it and didn't see cancerous cells that penetrated the tissue surrounding. you are very lucky. how ever- it still means you have high risk of having another melanoma so you need to minimize your sun exposure and be very aware of any new spots.

You need not worry and your doctor is right. Melanoma in situ is a lowest stage of cancer and can be treated by surgery alone. This is a cancer but it does not spread to other tissues and can be treated. You may not need any other surgery if this surgery has gone in a right way. But if this Melanoma in situ is not treated by surgery it can lead a higher level of cancer which, sometimes may not be treated.
