How can others can be protected from this shingles?

My cousin is diagnosed for shingles recently. I am really worried about his condition and I need to know the situation by which he can be treated for this infection. And how can others can be protected from this disease?

    The shingles usually occurs before or after the chicken pox as this virus retains inside the human body and cause this infection. This can be prevented by having vaccine for the disease and avoiding direct contact from the infected patients.
