  A person who is having bipolar mania will take time of their own to get treated as this is a mental disorder. After the treatment gets over he will return to normal for sure. But the treatment for bipolar disorder may be continued for lifetime depending upon the condition your brother is facing.

  This situation will be a test of your families ability to embrace a new "normal". Your brother is the same person he always was, bipolar disorder will just effect his moods and you will see behaviors that are out of the norm for him. With proper long term treatment those moods and behaviors can be controlled. However bipolar disorder does not yet have a cure, so It needs to be managed, meaning he will have to take medications and go through intensive theropy to learn to manage the disorder on a long term basis. Even with proper treatment episodes are common so a new "normal" will emerge.
