most hospitals say that babies do not develop allergies until they are 2 yrs old, but i am not so sure.

My daughter is almost 6 months old. She started coughing, sneezing and was having runny nose on Wednesday. By Thursday she cleared up. Today (Saturday) she is coughing and sneezing again. We originally thought it was just a cold, but now we began to wonder whether it might be of environmental allergies. She stayed with my in - laws who live in the country, so I thought maybe pollens could cause these signs. Most hospitals say that babies do not develop allergies until they are 2 yrs old, but I am not so sure. Please help.

  • Hi,
While teething babies produce more of saliva that produces cough and runny nose. Both sneezing and coughing is a way of driving out harmful agents. Check whether it is dry cough or wet cough. Wet cough simply means the baby is trying to expel phlegm contaminated with germs. Wait for a week or so and watch for symptoms. If sneezing and coughing persists and accompanied by itchy eyes and rashes on skin, you may visit an allergist. Given plenty of fluids and keep the environment clean. Good luck.
