Why does the medicines given to my mother for the treatment of her insomnia, is not treated.

Why does the medicines given to my mother for the treatment of her insomnia, is not treated. She has been taking these medicines since couple of months in breaks. I am not denying that this medicine does not help in sleeping. But they cannot treat insomnia. Why?

  • Medicines solely cannot treat insomnia. It is highly dependent on the mental setup of the person. Change in lifestyle is good for increasing the sleep and exercise will also increase the chance to sleep better during the night time.

  • Maybe she isn't taking the right kind of medication. As an insomnia sufferer myself, I know how frustrating and scary it can be. People suffer from insomnia for different reasons;it can be stress/anxiety related, depression, overuse of stimulants such as caffeine, or it can be related to pain. Does you mother have an idea of what's causing it? If she does, she can tell her doctor, and then he/she can prescribe the correct medication. Most times when a patient tells the doctor that she/he can't sleep, he/she will prescribe a drug that is commonly known to help. Many doctors will prescribe a sedative, such as Valium, Xanax or Ativan, taken before bedtime to relieve anxiety. Sometimes they will give a hypnotic drug ( your common "sleeping pill): Ambien, Lunesta, Dalmane and Halcion are commonly prescribed for insomnia but they take a little longer to take effect, but allow you to sleep longer. If your insomnia is caused by an anxiety/depressive disorder he/she may prescribe an anti-depressant such as Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac,or Effexor; these meds also can help with pain related insomnia. The more information she can give her doctor, the better he/she can help. Good Luck.
