Can mitral insufficiency be caused by high blood pressure?

I was diagnosed with mitral insufficiency during a recent heart cath along with a heart murmur, hyperlipidemia, ASCAD, and a 40% blockage in some of the smaller heart arteries. Can any of this be due to high blood pressure? Will keeping it under control with medication cure or prevent further worsening? whitecr@knology.ne t

  • Hi,

A long term high blood pressure and can lead to mitral valve regurgitation. The possibility is there but the whole picture is always not as expected, due to the involvement of many factors. High blood pressure can worsen the problem. Reduction of high blood pressure is good and important. Medications cannot treat the mitral related problem, but they can contain other risk factors. If the risk factors are contained then you can expect to have a better prognosis.
