my sister recently told me that my aunt was diagnosed with cervical cancer.

My sister recently told me that my aunt was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She told me that my aunt is in stage IV, and that she is refusing treatment. I know this does not sound fine but I look the world over online and they just show percentage of survival. I want to know how long she has at most.

  • The truth is, no one can really tell. Even the most top-notched doctors can't predict how long someone will live after such a diagnosis. Sometimes a doctor will tell a patient that he/she has a certain number of months to live, but this is based on an average survival rate for this prognosis; in other words, some people live longer than others. I had a friend when I was in high school whose father was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. This was back in the 70's when we did not have treatment for this type of cancer; he was given three to six months to live, and lived for 12 years. In fact, he didn't die from the cancer, he died of a heart attack. We do know, however, that a person's survival rate increases with treatment. Since your aunt has chosen not to have treatment, her chances for survival decrease, but there really is no sure way to predict how long she will live.
