Hi,
Success rates not only depend on the surgeon performing it, but depend on the mindset of the patient also. Be positive about your surgery. Sometimes a procedure fails even for an expert for unknown reasons like sudden increase in BP, bleeding etc. It is important to develop positive attitude. Whichever surgeon you chooses, be well informed about the potential risks and complications of the surgery. Good luck.

Which kind of ablation are you supposed to have? To do a catheter ablation, you need an electrophysiologist (EP). To do a surgical ablation (maze or mini maze), you need a cardiothoracic surgeon.
Before deciding on the best person to do your procedure, you need to know a lot more about the procedures and what questions you should be asking. Here are some resources that might help - especially see the success and risks pages for each:
1) Catheter ablation:
http://www.stopafib.org/catheter.cfm 2) Mini maze procedure (minimally-invasive surgical ablation):
http://www.stopafib.org/mini-maze.cfm 3) Maze procedure (surgical ablation):
http://www.stopafib.org/surgical-ablation.cfm You can also search for listings of some of the EPs, surgeons, and afib centers in your area:
http://www.stopafib.org/find.cfm (currently US only)
Hope this helps. Contact us at StopAfib.org (
