What would be the cause for the gout my mother has?

My mother has been diagnosed for gout. She had a red spot in her leg which on touching turned to grow and caused severe pain to her. She is undergoing treatment for the gout and she is getting fine now. What would be the cause for the gout she has?

There are various reason for the formation of gout this can be due to the hereditary. The other causes may be due to the smoking and alcohol related issues. This can be treated by the medications.
