Desyrel (trazodone) Possible Side Effects

Desyrel, or trozodone hydrochloride, is an effective antidepressant that also acts as a form of treatment for insomnia. Even though it is very effective when it comes to treating depression and sleep related issues, the drug is not without its side effects. Many of these side effects may or may not occur but in the most common of cases the patients don’t have any side effects or only experience minor cases of nausea, tiredness, headaches, and some changes in weight.

As a general rule, once your doctor puts you on Desyrel, you should not stop taking it unless they tell you otherwise. There are some cases, however, in which the patient will have no choice but to stop the treatment.

One of the conditions – although rare –  that has been reported in men once they start taking Desyrel is a painful erection that lasts more than a few hours. Should this happen to you, stop taking the drug and call your doctor immediately. This is a serious condition that might degenerate to the point of you needing surgery to correct it.

Major side effects of Desyrel

  • Suffering from restlessness and/or extreme mood swings.
  • Experiencing spells of dizziness, fast or pounding heartbeat as well as fainting in rare cases.
  • Beginning to get bruises or bleeding easily.
  • Getting easily agitated.
  • Suffering from hallucinations.
  • Having overactive reflexes.
  • Experiencing some nausea which may include vomiting and/or diarrhea.
  • Suffering from loss of coordination.

After a while, the user could experience some confusion, suffer from stiff (rigid) muscles, spike a high fever, and experience minor tremors.

Sometimes Desyrel may affect your appetite and cause some general muscle weakness. There are also reported cases of trouble concentrating, memory problems, and chest pains that could spread to the arm or shoulder as well.

Minor side effects of Desyrel

Apart from these serious side effects that occur quite seldom, there are also ones that can be considered minor and don’t require immediate medical attention. The list of such side effects includes:

  • Slightly blurred vision.
  • Mild headache.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Constipation.
  • Tiredness.

Possible allergic reactions

There are also some so-called allergic reactions for which every patient should keep an eye out. These include:

  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Swelling of the face, tongue, throat or lips.
  • Rash.
  • Hives.

Although most of the above-mentioned side effects don't occur often, a patient should be aware of them anyway to be on the safe side. If any negative unwanted reactions manifest, you are strongly recommended to seek medical advice as soon as possible.
