Recently, I've been receiving numerous TikTok and Instagram reels claiming to have the ultimate solution for migraines. One person asserts that sodium imbalance is responsible for about 75% of migraines, while another promotes soaking your feet in hot water as a remedy. At first glance, these tips may seem harmless, but are they really effective? As someone who has dealt with migraines throughout my adult life, I have explored both conventional and unconventional approaches to managing them. Here are some tips and questions to consider when encountering online cures.

TikTok Is Becoming Problematic

Firstly, are these solutions backed by medical validation? Have they been scientifically studied and proven? It's crucial to assess the potential side effects and whether they could conflict with other treatments or health conditions. Additionally, look out for any hidden agendas or sales pitches. Are you being offered discounted products or services? Does the content state that it's sponsored? If something seems too good to be true or appears like an internet trend, it's important to approach with caution. Moreover, if the creator dismisses proven treatment methods such as medication or lifestyle changes, this should raise concerns and skepticism.

While it's possible to find help on social media, it's crucial to ensure you aren't being exploited. Furthermore, we must recognize the impact of excessive engagement with social media posts. Who forsakes proper treatment to experiment with social media cures? People who lack access to healthcare may resort to these solutions instead of seeking professional help. Many migraine sufferers do not have access to specialized headache doctors or even general neurologists. Some may only receive treatment in emergency care settings and never explore preventive measures that could reduce their attacks. This is a failure of our healthcare system, aggravated by insurance companies making it increasingly difficult for patients to access treatment. On a personal note, I face the annual hurdle of prior authorization with my neurologist for a treatment that has consistently helped me.

Additionally, individuals who have had negative experiences with healthcare providers may turn to alternative solutions outside of medical settings. This is particularly true for marginalized communities or those who have experienced medical gaslighting or trauma. If you are struggling with migraines, it's important to strive to find a healthcare provider you trust. There are resources available to make you feel less alone. What happens when we oversimplify a complex neurological condition with such simplistic cures? Migraine is a multifaceted condition, and head pain is just one aspect of it. Ask someone who suffers from migraines about the numerous other symptoms that accompany this disease. Promoting the idea that something as simple as saltwater can fix the problem perpetuates the stigma surrounding migraines. Unable to join your friends for dinner due to a migraine? Just dip your feet in hot water. Can't see clearly? Drink saltwater. Do people believe that those living with chronic migraines haven't already tried countless remedies? I, for one, have explored numerous options. I feel conflicted when friends share these posts with me. On one hand, I appreciate their intention to help. On the other hand, I can't help but think, Do they really believe it's that easy? It's far from simple, and receiving these hacks in my inbox can be demoralizing and frustrating.

So, what can we do about it? It's crucial for individuals with migraines to build a relationship with their healthcare providers that allows for shared decision-making and open discussions about treatment options. If you choose to try non-pharmacological treatments, your healthcare provider can provide information on ones that have been researched, as well as their potential benefits and risks. We must also acknowledge that people are desperate for relief and will gravitate towards anyone or anything that promises it. Making it easier for people to receive treatment from healthcare providers is essential. Furthermore, since much of this misinformation circulates on social media, more healthcare providers and organizations need to create content aimed at addressing it.
