What causes swelling of the face?

Everybody experiences facial edemas, caused by excess water and salty food. Often can be hidden pathologies of the internal organs under the swelling of the face. The internal organs disorders, which lead to changes in the concentration of proteins, salts or increased pressure in the veins and capillaries, can result in puffiness of the forehead as well as the other parts of the body.

The swelling of the face can occur in case of heart or vessels pathologies development, endocrine disorders, kidney disease or the genitourinary system. In addition, the causes of facial edema can be liver disease, rheumatic diseases or veins disorder, allergic reactions. In the presence of these or other diseases, swelling of the face will disappear only after a thorough treatment of the root cause of the problem.

To understand why the puffiness appears in the morning, it is necessary to determine in which part of your face the excess liquid accumulates. For example, baggy lower eyelids and swollen eyes can tell about possible kidney diseases.

Symptoms to which you should pay attention: renal edema appears as a rule on the face in the mornings. Baggy lower eyelids and swollen eyes are a symptom of impaired renal function. In the second half of the day, facial edema usually decreases or disappears. Oedema in the nose indicates inflammation, which can be caused by chronic sinusitis, respiratory diseases or diabetes mellitus. But the fluids accumulation does not always hide terrible diseases, so there is no need to worry.

Swelling of the face can also be caused by such reasons:

  • High blood pressure
  • Pregnancy, toxicosis
  • Menstruation
  • Immunity disorders as well as vitamin deficiency
  • Improper diet (e.g., excessive diet or large amounts of salt in food)
  • Excess weight
  • Lack of healthy sleep
  • Allergies
  • Endocrine diseases (e.g., thyroid gland) and hormonal disorders
  • Solar burns

Despite the fact that the causes of puffiness are different and the ways to treat them are also different, prevention measures in many cases are the same:

  • Walk more, go in for sports, go on foot – physical activity helps to “squeeze out” excess liquid from the body.
  • Include “antioedematic” products in your diet: apples, cottage cheese, tea with lemon; in case of food allergy you need to follow a diet.
  • Limit salt intake to 2-5 grams per day. It is not recommended to salt food during cooking, it is better to salt ready food, or use soy sauce.
  • To avoid swelling of the face it is recommended to sleep on your back: sleeping on the stomach often results in baggy lower eyelids.

But remember that the puffiness is not a disease; it is just a result of the root problem. A corresponding treatment course should be prescribed only by a doctor.
