General information

Androgenic alopecia is the most common type of baldness. This is about 95% of all cases of baldness. The signs of baldness are the same for both men and women. 25% of women over the age of 50 also have androgenetic alopecia but men suffer from this disease much more often.

Signs of emerging androgenic alopecia are:

  • hair color change in the androgen-dependent zone (hypopigmentation);
  • thinning of the hairs in the androgen-dependent zone;
  • slowdown in hair growth;
  • increased oily hair (seborrhea).

It is necessary to accurately determine the cause of baldness before starting treatment. The patient must consult a trichologist and make some tests. The trichologist may prescribe to a patient a consultation with an endocrinologist, general practitioner and dermatologist. These specialists will exclude or confirm the presence of any disease and prescribe additional studies if it is necessary.

One of the most effective medicines for treating hair loss is Rogaine and its generics. Regular use of these medicines allows you to stop the intense loss and restore the normal growth of hair follicles. These medicines have shown high efficacy in the treatment of androgenic alopecia.

The active substance of Rogaine and its generics is Minoxidil. This substance is a highly researched and affordable hair growth stimulant. It has proven efficacy and is included in international medical standards for the treatment of androgenic alopecia. However, this substance has its proven limitations and precautions that must be considered.

  1. The medicine must be used continuously for several months to develop a sustainable effect (from 3-4 months to 1 year).
  2. The effect will be maintained only with constant use of the medicine.
  3. The active substance is not effective in 100% of cases. The effect is observed in approximately 40% of patients using the medicine.
  4. The effectiveness of the medicine is significantly reduced if patients have inflammatory changes around the hair follicles (microinflammation and fibrosis).
  5. The efficacy of the medicine depends on the extent of alopecia. The result is better if the extent of baldness is lower.

The best-known generics of Rogaine are Kosilon, Generolon and Alerana.

A multidimensional approach is needed for the treatment of chronic alopecia. Lasting result can be achieved and maintained only in this case.

What is Rogaine?

Rogaine is a brand name for minoxidil, a medication used for the treatment of hair loss. It’s primarily used for male and female pattern baldness and is available over-the-counter in liquid or foam form for topical application on the scalp.

How does Rogaine work?

Rogaine works by stimulating hair follicles to grow through its active ingredient, minoxidil. It dilates blood vessels in the scalp, which can improve hair follicle function and stimulate hair growth.

How should Rogaine be applied?

Rogaine should be applied directly to the scalp as per the instructions on the package. It’s usually applied twice a day and requires regular application for several months to see results.

What are the side effects of using Rogaine?

Common side effects include scalp irritation, dryness, scaling, flaking, and/or redness. More severe side effects can include unwanted facial hair growth, changes in hair texture, or rapid heart rate.

How long does it take to see results from Rogaine?

Results from using Rogaine can vary, but it typically takes about four months of consistent use to start seeing visible results. For some, it might take longer.

Can both men and women use Rogaine?

Yes, Rogaine is formulated for both men and women. However, the concentration of minoxidil may differ between men’s and women’s products.

Will hair loss resume if I stop using Rogaine?

If you stop using Rogaine, it’s likely that the hair loss process will resume and any regrown hair may be lost within several months.

Can Rogaine be used with other hair loss treatments?

Rogaine can sometimes be used in combination with other hair loss treatments, but it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before combining treatments.

Does Rogaine work for receding hairlines?

Rogaine is most effective in treating hair thinning at the top of the head and may have limited effectiveness in treating a receding hairline.

Is a prescription needed for Rogaine?

Rogaine can be purchased over-the-counter without a prescription. However, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions or those using other medications.

Precautions

Minoxidil has a list of contraindications. The use of medicines containing this active substance is contraindicated:

  • in the presence of chronic diseases of the cardiovascular system;
  • people who are prone to allergic reactions and those who have a hypersensitivity to Minoxidil;
  • patients under 18 years old;
  • people with diseases of the scalp in the exacerbation, with open wounds or ulcers;
  • pregnant women and nursing mothers;
  • for patients over 65 years of age (efficacy of Minoxidil in these patients has not been proven).

Dosage

Medicines containing Minoxidil are produced in various forms, such as sprays, lotions, shampoos and tablets. The concentration of the active substance may also be different. This is usually a 2% or 5% solution. Doctors recommend women to use 2% of the medicine. Men should use 5% solution of the medicine. However, in some cases men can start to apply 2% solution. Tablets in their effects on the body are different from other forms of the medicine. Therefore, it is necessary to consult a specialist before using them. It is especially important to consult a specialist if the patient suffers from diseases of the cardiovascular system.

How to take?

  • It is necessary to consult a trichologist before using the medicines based on Minoxidil.
  • It is necessary to use medicines with caution if the patient is taking antihypertensive drugs. Use of Minoxidil in this case is possible only if the benefit of the drug is higher than the risk of complications.
  • The patient should not take medicines if there are inflammatory diseases of the scalp.
  • The course of treatment for patients with androgenic alopecia lasts from 4 months to one year. The patient must constantly use the medicine to maintain the effect.

The medicine should be applied 2 times a day on a clean and dry scalp with a break of 8 hours. For example, a patient may apply it in the morning before work and in the evening after work. The drug is absorbed about an hour after application. Therefore, the patient must apply the medicine long before going out or sleeping.

Side-effects

Medicines based on Minoxidil have side-effects. Often these side-effects are caused by incorrect use of the medicine and appear in rare cases. The most common adverse drug responses are listed below.

Scalp irritation accompanied by peeling and dryness.

This is the most common side effect of Minoxidil. The patient can eliminate this side effect with a moisturizing cream and scalp anti-dandruff products.

Hypersensitivity reaction

This side-effect is very rare and is often caused by the propylene glycol contained in the medicine. This problem is easy to solve. The patient should use the form of the medicine not containing propylene glycol.

Hair growth in areas where there should be no such

Hair growth on the hands, fingers and other parts of the body is due to the high concentration of the active substance. It is recommended to reduce the concentration of Minoxidil or the frequency of use of the drug. Women should use the drug with a 2% concentration of the active substance. After that, unnecessary hair will quickly fall out, because they are not natural to the body.

Headaches, low blood pressure

These side effects appear only if the patient has problems with the cardiovascular system or severely low blood pressure. In such cases, it is recommended to stop using the medicine and consult a doctor.

Overdose

Overdose is observed in case of accidental oral administration of the drug. Overdose occurs due to vasorelaxant action of the active substance. Signs of overdose are listed below:

  • water retention and puffiness;
  • lowering blood pressure;
  • tachycardia.

Drug Overdose Treatment

Diuretics are prescribed for water retention and puffiness. Beta-blockers are prescribed for the treatment of tachycardia. Sodium Chloride 0.9% should be administered intravenously for the treatment of hypotension.

Interactions

There is a theoretical possibility of increasing postural hypotension if the patient uses vasodilators. However, this possibility has no proven clinical confirmation.

There is a slight increase in the content of minoxidil in the blood of patients suffering from arterial hypertension and taking Minoxidil orally.

The active substance can interact with some other drugs. The simultaneous use of Minoxidil for application and a cream containing betamethasone 0.05% reduces absorption of the active substance. The simultaneous use of Minoxidil for application and a cream containing tretinoin 0.05% leads to increased absorption of the active substance.

Alcohol interaction

Alcohol does not affect the effect of Minoxidil. However, the systematic use of alcohol leads to a deficiency of vitamins and trace substances in the body. It promotes hair thinning and psilosis.

Reviews

Doctor’s reviews

Dr. Williams (trichologist): I do not recommend to my patients any medicines with a high concentration of the active substance. In this case, using a drug with a high concentration may cause the opposite effect. Many patients notice active hair growth when using drugs with high dosage. However, it is important to understand that this action is based on vascular distention of the scalp. This process cannot be endless. The process of vascular distention will stop at some point. The opposite effect will appear after about 2-3 years of use of medicines with a high concentration. Hair will start to fall out again. Therefore, patients should use drugs with a lower concentration. This will stop alopecia for a long time.

Dr. Alanis: The benefits of minoxidil-based drugs are that they affect existing hair follicles. They also stimulate the growth of new hair follicles. These medicines are easy to use. Drugs are safe for both men and women. They can be purchased at a pharmacy without a prescription. The drugs work well on hair with different structure (thin, soft and hard hair). However, these drugs have disadvantages. The disadvantage is that they need to be applied constantly.

Reviews by Patients

Markus: My wife bought me this medicine. She said that this remedy has a good effect. I started to apply it to the problem areas of the head every morning and evening. Hair started to grow after about 3 months of using the medicine. I stopped using this drug after half a year. I thought the hair would start falling out again. However, so far everything is in order.

Anna: The medicine did not help me at all. I spent a lot of money and lost time. I do not know what’s going on. My aunt regained hair growth very quickly with it. I used the medicine for more than 5 months but my hair continued to fall out. The drug does not suit me. I think I need to consult a doctor and start treatment for baldness only after that.

Elene-Mary: My hair started to fall out immediately after giving birth. I thought it would stop after breastfeeding. But the situation has not changed. Folk and pharmaceutical remedies did not help me. I learned about this medicine and started using it. At first, the hair started to fall out even more. Then everything returned back to normal and new hairs started to appear. I used the medicine for about 8 months. Now my hair is completely restored.

Jackson: I advise everyone to consult a doctor before using this medicine. My hair started to fall out after 40 years. I bought a generic of Rogaine and started to use it according to the instructions. I did not notice any changes despite using it for more than 2 months. Hair fell out as before. I went to the doctor after this. I had the medical testing and did some tests. It turned out that I have not androgenic alopecia. My body suffered from a lack of microelements and stress. The doctor prescribed me a course of treatment and procedures. The hair loss stopped and my health returned back to normal after that.
