How long does it take for this medicine to take effect?

Velphoro acts locally within the gastrointestinal tract to bind dietary phosphate, preventing its absorption. The onset of action is closely tied to its presence in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract during meals or snacks containing phosphate. Thus, its effect is contingent upon the timing of ingestion relative to food intake, rather than a traditional pharmacokinetic measure of onset after administration. The reduction in serum phosphorus levels can be observed over days to weeks, with adjustments based on periodic monitoring of serum phosphorus levels.

How long do the effects of this medicine last?

The duration of Velphoro's effect is primarily during the transit through the GI tract, with its action ceasing once it is excreted in the feces. Continuous efficacy in controlling serum phosphorus levels requires regular administration with meals, tailored to the individual's dietary phosphate intake and serum phosphorus goals.

Is it safe to consume alcohol while taking this medicine?

There is no direct contraindication or warning regarding the consumption of alcohol while taking Velphoro. However, alcohol does not have a known interaction with the mechanism of action of Velphoro, as it does not significantly affect phosphate absorption. Nevertheless, patients with CKD should be cautious about alcohol consumption due to its potential impact on overall health and kidney function.

Is this a habit forming medicine?

Velphoro is not associated with any potential for abuse or habit formation. It does not exert any narcotic or psychoactive effects that could lead to dependence.

Can this medicine be taken during pregnancy?

The safety of Velphoro during pregnancy has not been established in controlled studies. Animal studies have not demonstrated direct or indirect harmful effects with respect to reproductive toxicity. As with all medications, Velphoro should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits justify the potential risks to the fetus. Healthcare providers should evaluate the need and adjust treatment based on clinical condition and serum phosphorus levels.

Can this medicine be taken while breast-feeding?

It is unknown whether Velphoro is excreted in human milk. Given the drug is minimally absorbed systemically when taken as directed, any amounts present in breast milk are likely to be low. However, the effects on the breastfed infant, or the effects on milk production, have not been determined. Therefore, caution should be exercised when Velphoro is administered to nursing mothers, considering the importance of the drug to the mother and the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants.

Sucroferric oxyhydroxide is used to lower high blood phosphate levels in people who are on dialysis due to severe kidney disease. Dialysis removes some phosphate from your blood, but it is difficult to remove enough to keep your phosphate levels balanced. Decreasing blood phosphate levels can help keep your bones strong, prevent unsafe buildup of minerals in your body, and may decrease the risk of heart disease and strokes that can result from high phosphate levels.Sucroferric oxyhydroxide contains a form of iron which is not absorbed by your body. It works by binding to phosphate in your diet. The phosphate then passes out of your body in your stool.
