What is Zyvox (Linezolid)?
Zyvox is the brand name for the prescription antibiotic linezolid. It is a member of the oxazolidinone class of antibiotics, a synthetic group developed to combat bacteria that have become resistant to other common antibiotics.
It works by inhibiting the initiation of bacterial protein synthesis, which stops the growth and spread of the infection. Zyvox is specifically reserved for treating serious infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria that are resistant to other treatments, such as vancomycin. It is available in oral tablet form, an oral suspension, and an intravenous (IV) solution for hospital use.
Zyvox is considered a last-line or reserve antibiotic. It should only be used when other, potentially less toxic, antibiotics are not suitable or have failed, as emphasized in discussions about responsible antibiotic use.
