As a rule, the first menstruation always causes ambiguous feelings in most girls. On the one hand, they are glad that they are growing up, and on the other, they are afraid. Many people wonder how to recognize the first symptoms of it and so on.

The normal age since which the first menstruation starts is 12 to 14 years. If this occurs before the age of twelve, doctors recommend that women regularly undergo breast cancer testing: the early maturation is explained by the increased estrogen level, which, on the one hand, causes early menstruation, and on the other – increases the risk of breast cancer (statistics show , that such women have a twenty percent higher probability of a cancerous tumor).

Also, too early periods (younger than ten years) or, too late (after seventeen), according to experts, can become a signal of increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

If the periods appear before the age of nine, then one can talk with confidence about the early activity of the ovaries, the pituitary and the hypothalamus. And in some cases even about the hormone-dependent tumor of the ovary or brain development. Therefore, such an early onset of menstruation becomes an urgent reason to see a doctor.

According to statistics, girls of the current generation have periods earlier than their great-grandmothers 100-200 years ago. Now the age from 11 to 14 years is considered as the norm. In most cases, they start at 12-13, although deviations are possible.

It is recommended to consult a pediatric gynecologist or an endocrinologist in the following situations:

  • Periods start at the age earlier than 11 years.
  • The girl is already 14, but periods have not come yet.
  • Sexual maturation (the appearance of hair, breast augmentation) has started before the age of 9 years old or there are no signs after the age of 12-13.

As a rule, such a situation is associated with unhealthy diet and lifestyle, pathologies, or, most often, the hormonal system disorde. In this case it is necessary to undergo examination, and if possible, to correct the deviations.

There is a high probability that the first menstruation will happen at the same age as girl’s mother, the grandmother, as well as aunts, sisters and so on. This is related to genetics.

In general, the average age of periods onset in the course of history gradually continues to decrease. While earlier it was fifteen-seventeen years old, now the periods start on average starts at the age of about 13. It is believed that this is the result, including better nutrition, which carries weight gain at an earlier age.
