Cat allergy getting worse despite OTC meds? Rehoming only option?

I’ve had mild allergies to my cat for years, managed okay with OTC antihistamines (cetirizine). But the last few months, it’s gotten MUCH worse – constant sneezing fits, eyes swollen and itchy, even some wheezing. Meds barely touch it now. I adore my cat (had him 5 years) and the thought of rehoming breaks my heart. Has anyone found a long-term solution beyond pills? Allergy shots? Anything? Please help!

  1. Oh honey, I’ve been right where you are. My allergies to my tabby suddenly went from manageable to unbearable out of nowhere. First, have you tried switching antihistamines? Sometimes your body just gets used to one kind. Zyrtec stopped working for me but Allegra did the trick for a while.

The game-changer for me was getting a really good HEPA air purifier for the bedroom and making it a strict no-cat zone. I know it’s hard, but having one room where you can breathe fully helps so much. Also, wiping my cat down with pet allergen wipes weekly helped reduce the dander.
