Dr. Abraham Cherrick is known among his patients and peers as an expert in diagnosing the cause of pain, even in the most complex cases. He is consistently named a “top doctor” in pain management by Washingtonian Magazine and Northern Virginia Magazine, most recently in 2017 and 2018.In diagnosing and treating patients, he draws on his more than 30 years of experience with National Spine & Pain Centers. “I came here after my medical residency, and I never left,” said Dr. Cherrick. In fact, he is a founding member of the practice. In part, Dr. Cherrick attributes his diagnostic expertise to his listening skills and the value he places on input from patients. “Patients can tell us a lot about their pain; we just need to ask the right questions,” said Dr. Cherrick. After gathering patient feedback, Dr. Cherrick completes a skillful physical exam. At that point, he meticulously synthesizes this information with state-of-the-art diagnostic tests. “When we capture enough data, we can begin …to ‘connect the dots’ and an accurate picture of the problem begins to appear,” said Dr. Cherrick.Dr. Cherrick has an expertise in several areas, including the evaluation and treatment of cervical and lumbar disc diseases such as disc herniation and spinal stenosis. He also has a special interest in challenging chronic pain conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and fibromyalgia. In addition, Dr. Cherrick has extensive knowledge about the medical management of pain, but he feels that the best results for patients come from the coupling of pharmacotherapy with the nonsurgical procedures that are offered at National Spine & Pain Centers. Because of his degree in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Cherrick appreciates that optimal results for patients are often gained with the addition of physical therapy. “Improving or eliminating the pain with the help of managed medication and physical therapy can take a while, but it is still an important option for some people,” said Dr. Cherrick. For many years, Dr. Cherrick has been chosen to serve as a board examiner for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. During his residency at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Dr. Cherrick was named chief resident.Dr. Cherrick was born and raised in St. Louis and, through that connection, has a passionate love of baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals. For the past ten years, he has participated in a baseball fantasy camp sponsored by the Cardinals, offering him a chance to take the field with others who love the game and former major league legends and Hall of Famers such as Lou Brock and Ozzie Smith. Adding to the camp’s appeal, the proceeds are donated to a children’s hospital in St. Louis. Dr. Cherrick also plays baseball in a local adult league.
