Dr. Alexander Coon is one of the world’s leading vascular neurosurgeons. He serves as the Director of Endovascular and Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery at the Carondelet Neurological Institute of St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s Hospitals in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Coon spent 15 years at The Johns Hopkins University Hospital where he founded the Endovascular Neurosurgery service and lead its growth into one of the largest in the nation. During this time, he served as the Director of Endovascular Neurosurgery for all of Johns Hopkins Medicine and held academic appointments within the Departments of Neurosurgery, Radiology, and Neurology.
Most known for his expertise in the use of flow-diverting stents (Pipeline and Surpass) and intra-saccular flow disrupters (WEB) for the endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms, Dr. Coon has performed or proctored over 1500 cases of cerebral aneurysm surgery. He has mentored hundreds of physicians in the use of these technologies across the United States and …around the world. heart – black/whiteDr. Coon is a prolific academic who has authored >200 peer-reviewed publications in the field of vascular neurosurgery. He has lectured on 5 different continents having given over 150 national/international speeches and presentations. He has participated and demonstrated leadership in numerous multi-center FDA clinical device trials and serves on the global steering committee for the upcoming EVOLVE (Surpass) trial.
In addition to endovascular and microsurgical cerebral/brain aneurysm surgery, his practice involves the treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), cavernous malformations, and dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) of the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Coon utilizes the latest surgical and endovascular techniques to treat patients with carotid artery stenosis, acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and moyamoya disease. He routinely performs diagnostic cerebral and spinal angiography (DSA) for all vascular conditions. He also focuses on the specialized treatment of spinal disorders, neurological trauma, brain tumors, and hydrocephalus.
Dr. Coon and the cerebrovascular team at the Carondelet Neurological Institute are one of the most experienced teams in the Western United States in treating complex cerebral aneurysms, repairing arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the brain, and removing stroke-causing blood clots using mechanical retrieval devices.
He has been happily married to his wife Laura for 16 years and has two children, Alex (9) and Ellie (5). Dr. Coon is an avid outdoor enthusiast who has completed 19 Ironman events and 4 Alaskan expeditionary climbs. He enjoys cycling, hiking, golf, and skiing with his family.
Dr. Alexander Coon currently sees patients at Western Neuro on St. Joseph’s campus on Mondays or by alternate appointments in his office. He has interactional proficiency in Spanish.
