Dr. Mayer hails originally from western Pennsylvania. In 1973, he obtained a BS degree in Biology from Temple University in Philadelphia, then went on to receive his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Mayer did his specialty training in Ob-Gyn at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, graduating in 1981. He subsequently served as an Ob-Gyn Physician Service Chief in Nurenburg, Germany until 1984. Dr. Mayer completed a fellowship in Pelvic Surgery at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya and practiced in East Africa including work with the East African Flying Doctors. His next military assignment took him to William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas from 1986 to 1988. Dr. Mayer then entered a second fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Yale University. After his subspecialty training, Dr. Mayer was stationed at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he served as Chief of the Gyn-Oncology …Division. In 1993, he served as Chief of Gyn-Oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and, most recently, was Chairman of the Department of Ob-Gyn until his retirement as an Army colonel in September, 1999. Dr. Mayer is board certified in both general Ob-Gyn and Gyn-Oncology. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons. His free time is devoted to his wife Ellen and children Sarah and David who are enthusiastic residents of West Hartford.
