Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:My initial interest in Medicine originated with my childhood fascination of that ‘black box’ called the brain when I would come upon it reading the World Book Encyclopedia. To understand the brain, I thought, was to try to understand what makes us human, why we are who we are, thinks as we might, and why and how we can do the simplest or most complex things. This is revealed when things go wrong with the brain. So my interest was initially more scientific and one of curiosity, something that still is important for keeping me engaged in what I do.Along the way I discovered that I was unexpectedly good with people and felt like I found the secret which is that people want to be heard and understood. There was now a deeper meaning and purpose for this knowledge and curiosity, to be able to listen to others and share this knowledge that was academic for me but which can be profound for someone else’s well-being. To do something meaningful and …at times heroic. A no-brainer, so to speak.
