Dr. Avanti Redkar is board certified in podiatric medicine and joined UFAI under a fellowship in sports medicine and ankle reconstruction. She specializes in foot and ankle pathology and also completed a dermatopathology fellowship in Alpharetta, Georgia.Born in Pune, India, she and her family immigrated to Auburn, Alabama when she was four years old and then settled down near Scranton, Pennsylvania when she was eight. She attended undergrad at the University of Scranton and graduated with a degree in biology. From there, she attended SUNY Buffalo to earn a Master’s degree in nutrition, and then podiatry school at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. She completed her surgical residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York, where she was trained in foot and rearfoot surgery, wound care, and hyperbaric medicine.Like many at UFAI, Dr. Redkar loves to move and enjoys an active and vibrant recreational life. Growing up, she would challenge her parents and younger …brother to games of tennis. She continued to play sports throughout high school, and during her time as an undergrad she competed in intramural soccer with her fellow biology “nerds” on a team dubbed “The Double Helix.” She also loves swimming, hiking and several intense workout programs. However, for Dr. Redkar, none of these activities compares to dancing. Dr. Redkar is a classical Indian dancer, trained in the tradition of bharata natyam. She started taking bharata natyam classes in middle school and continued dancing for ten years. Bharata natyam dancers progress through their training by reaching increasingly more challenging levels, and upon completing all levels, a dancer performs solo for two and a half hours at a graduation ceremony, called an arangetram.Although Dr. Redkar loved dancing, the rigorous training required to master the precise steps and statuesque poses was hard on her feet. She repeatedly twisted her ankle and regularly developed calluses and painful blisters. She visited several doctors for help, with no luck until she finally saw a podiatrist. He showed her the proper strapping and offloading devices that could help ease the pain. The good doctor even attended the ceremony to assist should anything happen to Dr. Redkar’s ankle. To this day, she swears that “without my podiatrist, I would not have been able to perform!”
