Dr. Zoghi joined the Adult Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplant program at Texas Transplant Institute, a department of Methodist Hospital, in July 2013. “I love the concept of Methodist Healthcare—treating the soul and the body. I believe if you help the patient by combining the spiritual and the physical—the entire person—it’s very rewarding.†Dr. Zoghi strives to listen to his patients and be generous with the time he spends with them and their loved ones, and always seeks to go the extra mile for the good of his patients.
Dr. Zoghi received his MD and PhD from Texas A&M Health Science Center. He subsequently completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Hospital System in Dallas, ranked a top ten program in internal medicine in the United States. Dr. Zoghi then completed his hematology/medical oncology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and at the Cancer Therapy and …Research Center (CTRC), a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center with one of the largest Phase 1 clinical trial programs in the country.
During his hematology/medical oncology fellowship, Dr. Zoghi fell in love with bone marrow transplantation. “With leukemia patients, we give them chemotherapy and, two years later, they might come back because the cancer has recurred. With bone marrow transplantation, we can move them one step above—it’s the ultimate treatment possibility. We take very sick, very challenging patients and help them improve to the next level,†says Dr. Zoghi.
During his fellowship, he was chosen to present at the American Society of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation about exciting joint research being done at Methodist Hospital regarding the treatment of relapse in leukemia patients after bone marrow transplant.
Also during his fellowship, Dr. Zoghi conducted very exciting research focused on microRNA as a new treatment for chemotherapy-resistant breast cancer. (See New Hope for Taming Triple-Negative Breast Cancer to learn more about it.). He holds a patent for this novel therapy in breast cancer. As a result of this research, Dr. Zoghi was one of only four recipients in Texas to receive the Texas Society of Clinical Oncology Fellows award. His abstract was chosen out of 200 poster presentations to be further discussed in a symposium setting at the ASCO Breast Cancer Symposium in September 2012: Studies Lay Groundwork for Improving Management of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer—and chosen out of thousands selected at the prestigious San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December 2012. The Role of microRNA in Treatment of Chemo-Resistant Breast Cancer was presented to the Texas Society of Clinical Oncology Membership Conference in September 2012. His joint research will be pursued by other physicians and scientist as a possible Phase I clinical trial into this potential treatment at CTRC later in 2013.
Dr. Zoghi is a member of a number of professional organizations: Texas Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, American Board of Internal Medicine, American College of Physicians, and American Medical Association.
He is board certified in medical oncology and hematology.
