I was born in Indio, California, in the blistering August heat of the area near Palm Springs. I grew up on a grape and grapefruit farm in that desert and remember days when I was just hoping for a cool breeze. Being a doctor was never a dream of mine until I attended college at UC Irvine and met a professor who nudged me toward medicine. Despite protests from my mom about my leaving California, I attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. There I met many special people who encouraged me to become a pediatrician. I married my husband in the first year of my pediatric training and we now have two teenage girls. I enjoy all kinds of arts and crafts as well as gymnastics and diving.
