Dr. Cynthia A. Ballenger received her Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She was on the varsity Fencing Team, where she was team captain her senior year and went to the NCAA Regionals. She received her medical degree in 1995 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated with Honors. During medical school, she completed a fellowship in Pathology at Emory University, during which time she performed research projects in the fields of genetics and neuropsychopharmacology. She published her research and presented it at local and national meetings.
Dr. Ballenger completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. She completed a residency in Radiation Oncology in 2000 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During her residency, her research focus was tumor hypoxia, primarily in breast and cervical cancer patients. Again, her research was …published and presented at several meetings. During her residency, Dr. Ballenger served as the President of the UNC Hospitals House Staff. She was the Chief Resident in Radiation Oncology her last year of residency.
She is a member of the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the American Radium Society. Locally, she is a member of the North Carolina Medical Society and the Pitt County Medical Society. Prior to joining 21st Century Oncology, Dr. Ballenger served on faculty at Duke University and at Emory University. She was the Medical Director at the Albemarle Hospital Regional Oncology Center, where she was named one of the “5 People Who Make a Difference” in the community in 2007 through either their work or volunteerism.
Dr. Ballenger’s interests include Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatment (IMRT), Breast Cancer, and the emerging field of psycho-oncology, which places a focus on treating the “whole” patient, not just their disease site. Dr. Ballenger is committed to compassionate patient care in addition to state of the art treatment delivery. She is married, has the world’s greatest twin sons, and derives great joy from spending time with her extended family. She enjoys playing sports, if and when time allows, as well as watching N.C. State sporting events.
