Bio: David A. McLain, MD, FACP, FACR
David McLain is a native of Chicago, received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, and then graduated with honors from Tulane Medical School in New Orleans. He won the senior medicine award at Tulane, The Order of the Gold- Tipped Stethoscope, and completed a medical internship at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. At Barnes Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis he was a medical resident and Rheumatology fellow. He is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. Following his training, for 2 years he was an instructor in the Department of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. In 1981, he moved to Birmingham, Alabama where he is presently Chief of Rheumatology at Brookwood Medical Center. In 1983, Dr. McLain started a rheumatology review course that subsequently became Rheumatology on the Beach and in 2009 was renamed the Congress of Clinical Rheumatology. Now in its 27th year, the …Congress of Clinical Rheumatology has been attended by physicians from throughout the U.S., Canada, and outside North America and is considered one of the premier clinical rheumatology meetings in the United States. In 2008, it became the second largest rheumatology meeting in the U.S. He has served on the Executive Committee of Brookwood Medical Center. He is the founder of Birmingham Rheumatology, a group of five rheumatologists with offices at Brookwood, Shelby County, Sylacauga, and Pell City, AL. Dr. McLain is past President of the Alabama Society for the Rheumatic Diseases. In 1995, Dr. McLain won an Excellence in Teaching award from the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a founding Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. He has been an advisory board member of the Fibromyalgia Aware magazine. He has been a regular reviewer for the Psoriasis Forum, published by the National Psoriasis Foundation. He conducts clinical research, has received research grants, and has published research papers in peer reviewed journals. He was on the steering committee for the multi-national Uncover study on pulmonary hypertension in scleroderma. In 1999, the Alabama Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation named him the Rheumatologist of the Year for the state of Alabama. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Rheumatologists.
