During Dr. Diaz’s Gynecological training program at the University of Missouri, he developed an interest the treatment of infertility during training in endometriosis surgery, uterine reconstruction for fibroids, tubal repair and all aspects of vaginal surgery. He established the first microsurgical laboratory for training resident physicians and medical students in the technique of microsurgical unification for tubal repair. His mentor, Dr. William Griffin, encouraged him to pursue advanced fellowship training.
Dr. Diaz was awarded a two year Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. His training was supervised by Dr. Melvin Taymor, whose team of scientists achieved the first IVF pregnancy in New England (1984). Dr. Taymor was responsible for introducing the use of the fertility drug Pergonal to the United States in collaboration with Dr. Bruno Lunenfeld from Israel. Dr. Diaz performed research in the …development of medication protocols for IVF that led to one of the highest pregnancy rates in the nation. At Harvard, Dr. Diaz was taught the art and science of in-vitro fertilization at Boston IVF, the largest private IVF clinic in the world. Dr. Diaz%u2019 enthusiasm in surgery led to a European experience when he was invited to Kiel, West Germany by Professor Kurt Semm, the inventor of many laparoscopic instruments still routinely used today.
Teaching was an integral part of the Fellowship Program. Dr. Diaz was appointed to the teaching staff at Harvard Medical School as Instructor in Obstetrics and Gynecology with an emphasis in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Teaching was a passion of Dr. Diaz since he minored in education at Loyola University in Chicago. The Harvard teaching duties included Grand Rounds presentation, informal teaching of medical students and OB/GYN residents plus mentoring visiting students from around the world. Dr. Diaz%u2019 enthusiasm for teaching continues in private practice providing tutorials for visiting physicians, nurses, representatives from industry and most importantly educating his patients at West Coast Fertility Centers.
