He was raised in Bethesda, Maryland where he attended Walt Whitman High School. This was followed by a Biology degree from Emory University in 1991. He then went to the New York University School of Medicine followed by residency at the University of Maryland and a fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
