James R. Mason, M.D., is the director of the Scripps Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Center and the stem cell lab at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines.
Dr. Mason, a native San Diegan, went to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and then trained in internal medicine, medical oncology/hematology and bone marrow transplantation at the University of California, San Diego.
He performed the first outpatient bone marrow and stem cell transplants in San Diego. As director of the BMT Center, he has overseen the completion of hundreds of autologous outpatient transplants, making Scripps Clinic the recognized leader in this field on the West Coast.
Currently, under Dr. Masons leadership, the BMT Center offers innovative therapy programs (incorporating dose-intensive chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy) for patients with the following:
-Breast cancer
-Non-Hodgkins lymphoma
-Hodgkins lymphoma
-Multiple myeloma
-Acute and chronic leukemia
-Diseases of the bone marrow and selected solid tumors
The Scripps BMT Center is a National Marrow Donor Program designated transplant center and is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy.
