John R. Lurain, MD, received his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College in 1968 and his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1972. He completed his residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Magee-Women’s Hospital in 1975. After serving in the United States Navy as Lieutenant Commander at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia from 1975 to 1977, Dr. Lurain completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Lurain joined Northwestern University in 1979 as assistant professor, quickly ascending the ranks to associate professor with tenure in 1983, and professor in 1989. From 1985 to 2004, he served as chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, and until 2010, he was the John and Ruth Brewer Professor of Gynecology and Cancer Research at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He currently is director of the John I. Brewer Trophoblastic Disease …Center and program director for the fellowship in gynecologic oncology as well as the Marcia Stenn Professor of Gynecologic Oncology at the medical school. Dr. Lurain has been recognized with a myriad of honors, including being named as one of the Best Doctors in America and Top Doctors for Cancer. In November of 2009, he received a gold medal from the International Society for the Study of Trophoblastic Diseases for his significant contributions to the knowledge of trophoblastic disease. Dr. Lurain’s primary research interests are clinical factors associated with the prognosis and treatment of gestational trophoblastic diseases and uterine and ovarian cancers. He has authored more than 180 publications, including scientific articles, reviews, chapters, and books.
