Dr. Joseph Valenza received his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center Downstate and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School. He also earned a Master’s of Structural/Biomedical Engineering from The Cooper Union in New York City.
Dr. Valenza is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with additional sub-specialty certification in pain medicine. As a specialist in pain management, he treats individuals with a wide range of pain issues, including complex regional pain syndrome, repetitive motion disorders, and spinal cord injury.
Dr. Valenza joined the Kessler Institute in 1996 as an outreach physiatrist and was appointed Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Kessler’s former Great Falls and Cedar Grove centers. He also served as Director of the Electromyography Laboratory at West Hudson Hospital in …Kearny, NJ and as a consultant at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth. In 1997, he was appointed Director of Pain Management and Clinical Chief at Kessler’s Chester campus and in 2000, he was named Director of Pain Management for the entire Kessler system.
A 5th degree black belt, Dr. Valenza has a special interest in martial arts therapy for people with disabilities, focusing on wheelchair Tae Kwon Do. He teaches the martial arts skills to both able-bodied individuals and people with disabilities.
He has published numerous studies in professional journals on martial arts therapy for individuals with disabilities and other subjects. He has also lectured extensively on pain management, wheelchair Tae Kwon Do and other subjects. Well-known as an expert in his field, the media often call upon Dr. Valenza to provide insight and information on a range of topics and he has appeared on numerous television programs.
Dr. Valenza is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Pain Society, the Electrodiagnostic Medicine Association of New Jersey, the Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Academy of Pain Management and he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pain Medicine.
In 2005, Dr. Valenza was awarded the Elizabeth Narcessian Award, which recognizes outstanding educational achievement in pain management. He has also been recognized as a leading physician in the Consumer Research Council’s Guide to America’s Top Physicians and is named to Who’s Who in Medicine and the Consumer’s Guide to Top Physicians.
