Dr. Kert D. Sabbath is a medical oncologist and hematologist with MOH’s facility at the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Sabbath finds this an exciting time to be working in cancer treatment. “For the first time,” he says, “we are starting to understand the basic machinery of normal and cancers cells. This allows us to identify the differences between these cells. With this understanding comes the ability to develop drugs that are directed at the cancer cells. These newer medications can treat the cancer while minimizing side effects on the rest of the body. In contrast to traditional chemotherapy, these newer treatments are much better tolerated.”
This better understanding of cell mechanisms has resulted over the past several years in the development of a new class of cancer treatment with drugs that specifically target only the abnormal cells. “We are entering the era of personalized medicine where treatment …is tailored for each unique individual,” says Dr. Sabbath. “The most exciting part is that this is just the beginning. I am more optimistic than at any time in my career.”
Dr. Sabbath has been deeply involved in some of the clinical cancer research that has led to these advancements, and his patients benefit directly from this. “My patients have access to the newest drugs and treatments,” he says. “Many of these treatments are not available to other physicians or patients.”
Though skilled in the treatment of all forms of cancer and blood diseases, Dr. Sabbath is particularly interested in the treatment of lung and breast cancers. “Lung and breast cancer are common diseases that affect a wide variety of people from the young to the elderly,” he says. “Our understanding of these diseases has increased dramatically in the past few years. This has resulted in many new drugs and treatments that have helped to improve the lives of my patients.”
Dr. Sabbath chose to practice at MOH, because, he says, MOH “offers me the best possible of all worlds. I can spend nearly all of my time caring for patients. The group provides the finest administrative support so that I can provide state-of-the-art medicine to all of my patients. Having the support of so many colleagues is invaluable. I am very proud to be able to make a contribution to my patients on a daily basis.”
