Dr. Michael Charles Rowbotham, MD

Neurology; Pain Management Dr. Michael C. Rowbotham is a renowned expert in the pathophysiology, management and treatment of neuropathic pain disorders. In 1990, Rowbotham founded the UCSF Pain Clinical Research Center (PCRC), an international leader of the clinical research of pain disorders. In addition to directing the PCRC, he also serves as associate director of the UCSF Pain Management Center at Mount Zion. Rowbotham earned his medical degree from UCSF, where he also completed a research fellowship in psychopharmacology and neurology fellowship in pain research as well as a residency in neurology and internship in medicine. He completed a residency in neurology at Boston University. In addition to caring for patients, Rowbotham is an active researcher studying the common neuropathic pain syndrome, called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Rowbotham is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the National Institutes of Health Mid-Career Investigator Award in …Patient-Oriented Research and he was the winner of the UCSF Innovation Accelerator Executive Summary Competition. He is also a member of various professional societies, including the American Academy of Neurology. Rowbotham also holds the position of professor of clinical neurology and anesthesia at UCSF.
