Dr. Alvarez has practiced Pediatrics for nearly three decades. In addition to general pediatric care, Dr. Alvarez offers adolescent and young adult care. What is your patient care philosophy?I listen and observe patients’ needs before dispensing care or advice.Why did you decide to become a physician?I never intended to be a physician. My “nerdiness” initially led me to study chemistry and biology, with the hope of becoming a biochemical engineer. Along the path, I found myself desiring to be in the foreground, rendering medical care.What interesting facts would you like to share about yourself and your family?I was raised in the South Bronx, residing in public housing. I was blessed to have as my parents, Raul and Ramon Alvarez, who arrived to New York City shortly after World War II as a young married couple.Though poor, they were caring and generous with the little they had and worked for. They instilled in me, my brother and my sister the essence of family unity …and sharing and providing love and comfort.I truly believe that medicine is similar, in that it provides care, comfort and love to patients and their families.
